It's been almost a year

Well, first off, for anyone looking at this now I sincerely apologize for not having updated my blog in almost a year. I have taken a break from art for the time being, and have instead been working on other things. One of these "other things" has been spending a lot of time baking when I'm not working at my other job. Here's a couple of pics of the tasty vegan creations I've been whipping up:

Mini (Gluten-Free!) Carrot Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Icing and Candied Ginger

Fresh Fruit Tarts with Oatmeal Cinnamon Crust

Strawberry Chocolate Cakelets with Ganache Frosting

I've also been doing a bit of henna, which I learned how to mix and make myself, and apply with pretty satisfactory results!

And last but not least, I planted my very own vegetable garden in the summer of 2007 and managed to grow herbs and veggies without *too* many slug casualties.

Eggplant, Tomatoes (Cherry, Golden, and Beefsteak), green beans, basil, chives and parsley!

I think from now on I will start to move my creative energy over to baking and decorating desserts, which I find much more fulfilling (and tasty!) than what I've done up until this point, and which is just as much art to me as something that goes onto paper instead of a plate!

Applied Arts submissions

Phew! I've been working on these three pieces for quite a while on and off- I did most of the linework last semester but finally decided to finish them so I could submit them to the Applied Arts competition. Here's hoping! This is "The Tale of Krishna and Rukmini", an Indian story about Krishna obtaining one of his thousands of wives.

Edit: Didn't get in to AA this year, looks like I'll just have to try harder next time!

Headlines

Eco-trendy is not really all that eco-friendly...
This is the piece I did for the Headlines book, about the new "eco-trendy" people I see around. People these days are promoting products that are eco-friendly, and while usually any change is a step in the right direction, the friendliest thing we can do for the earth is to not by anything new at all if we can help it.

Blackbird stuff

Here's a small project for Visual Narrative class- 2 spreads based on song lyrics from the folktale "Blackbird/Black Nag". I'm happy with how the colours turned out, and the linework was fun too. The compositions (especially the first one) could have used some tweaking, but I'll save my worrying for the big final project coming up this semester instead :)
I'm using the same story for my animation for computers class, which should be interesting.

Boom Shiva

Whoa!! What's that you say? Boobies?
I did this over the summer for the restaurant my uncle co-owns in Toronto (female pin-up Shiva, topless for inside the restaurant). I was going to post the clothed version as well, but it's the same thing only not quite as awesome. This project was a lot of fun!

PS> if you wanna check out the restaurant, it's called "Boom Shiva", on Queen St. W in-between the Drake and the Gladstone. It's a little pricier than college-students tend to eat, but has very tasty (also veggie) food and like a hundred different types of fairly cheap beer from microbreweries etc. Cool stuff.

Finally!!

Geez, so I finally managed to get back into my account (yay!)
Here's the update I've been trying to do for months :P

This illustration was done on the computer-- it started out differently as a fake maybelline lipstick ad for a magazine project I was doing, but got revamped when I was playing around. I think it turned out pretty good.
PS> this is a picture of my desk at school! All cutesy. It now showcases a real-live small potted christmas tree! So long as I keep watering it, it'll be all nice and festive all the way till Christmas!

inaugural post

Did this quick painting as a doodle about 2 nights ago and really liked it.
It's basically the first nice piece I've done for myself since I started at the college. Felt really good to just sit down and doodle without feeling pressured in some way. Hopefully I can make more things like this. Incorporated some of the henna-inspired designs I picked up over the summer, which turned out nice, in a nice gold pen.
